House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy stepped forth this Sunday to declare that he has “100 percent” confidence in Robert Mueller to conduct a fair investigation if he is allowed the proper resources, and called upon the lawmakers criticizing the special counsel to “leave him the hell alone.”
“I think he’s got a fair prosecutor in Bob Mueller, but I don’t think he’s got a fair jury,” Gowdy said while appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” in reference to President Trump.
“Mueller didn’t raise his hand and say ‘pick me,’” Gowdy added. “We as a country asked him to do this.”
Mueller is currently conducting a probe into Russian election meddling and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow during the 2016 election.
While Trump has repeatedly branded the investigation a “hoax” and “witch hunt,” several Republican lawmakers have come forth in recent weeks to argue that the FBI, and Mueller’s investigation are infected with a bias.
Several Republicans in Congress, including Gowdy, have demanded for the release of a classified memo that supposedly shows FBI officials severely abusing surveillance power.
Republicans have also become obsessed with several text messages exchanged between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page that they say prove an anti-Trump bias. Strzok was removed from Mueller’s investigation last year after the texts were uncovered.
“Republicans would be well served, let the texts speak for themselves, let the jury make up their mind and quit engaging in hyperbole, which we seem to do a lot,” Gowdy said.
Mueller has recently requested an interview with Trump only to be denied by his personal lawyers in a controversial new move.
