Now more than ever, if a woman is brave enough to come forward with her harrowing tales of sexual assault, we must believe her. More than that, we must help her find the much-deserved justice against her assailant – regardless of how prominent a public figure they may be. The main thing these women need is support. They deserve all the encouragement in the world – especially from their fellow women. That’s why it drives millions of Americans crazy to see the continued non-action taken by Melania and/or Ivanka in response to these sexual assault stories being brought to light – most notably, the ones involving Donald Trump.
In an interview this week, beloved actress Meryl Streep echoed similar sentiments on the lady Trumps and their silence on the matter. Streep said, “I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.”
Streep continued, saying, “You make movies. You think you know everything about everybody. So much gossip. You don’t know anything. People are so inscrutable on a certain level. And it’s a shock. Some of my favorite people have been brought down by this, and he’s not one of them.”
The long-time actress wasn’t even close to done yet. As she added that, “I don’t have a Twitter thing or — handle, whatever. And I don’t have Facebook. I really had to think. Because it really underlined my own sense of cluelessness, and also how evil, deeply evil, and duplicitous, a person [Weinstein] was, yet such a champion of really great work.”
She concluded her impassioned statement by saying, “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
